Bareback: A Werewolf’s Tale by Joshua Skye

Book Blurb :

Alex is a young gay man living in conservative Wren, Pennsylvania, is a town that really has nothing for him. Wren is like one of those southern towns where “ain’t no homosexuals there”. In fact there are really no minorities in Wren. Then Morgan enters Alex’s life, he becomes part of an affectionate couple and before long they become involved in a passionate affair. Unfortunately their sexual activities were not what we consider safe.

Just about the same time, something very strange began happening in Wren. Citizens became victims to a wild animal that has found its way into town having come from the surrounding mountainside. Alex and Morgan spent a wild weekend of orgiastic enjoyment and just as quickly as the two men fell in love did Morgan suddenly disappear. Alex immediately began to ail and he convinced himself that Morgan had passed on some kind of venereal disease to him. As he became sicker, Morgan surprisingly returned and Alex understands that it was indeed Morgan who had infected him. However he was not suffering from what he thought— Morgan had made him into a werewolf.

Skye writes with wonderful description and while this is paranormal fiction, there is no reason why something like this can happen (and by that I mean using the werewolf as a metaphor). The language here is quite bold and the writing is indeed excellent. Now that we are once again in the vampire cycle, this is a book that many will find interesting.

Review:

The whole story is a bit weird, but for sure not in a bad way. This story has a touch of reality. The reader gets to know a few different characters and each one of them is part of a mysterious puzzle at the end. Timeframe for the whole storyline is a month, “July”. All the characters’ live in Wren, a small town in Allegheny National Forest. There are two main characters in this story, Alex Morningside and his sister, Winona.

Alex has agreed to accompany Winona on one of her weekend jaunts. Her favorite Wren destination is Randy’s.  Alex is a shy, quiet person and as soon as Alex and his sister Noni get to Randy’s, she excuses herself and leaves Alex on his own. As soon as Alex’s sister vanishes on the dance floor, he is approached by a stranger, Morgan.  In Alex’s opinion, guys as gorgeous as Morgan don’t flirt with him. Morgan is from London and, as a Brit, beautiful in Alex’s eyes. Alex knows he isn’t a brave person, his lack of confidence makes him nervous and clumsy, but Alex knows what he wants and he wants Morgan.

Alex invites Morgan to his home. There they have fallen into the fun of sex, sex and more sex, which has lasted a whole weekend. On Monday, Alex starts to feel like hell. He had a headache and simply wants to sleep. Alex fee;s like shit, he even deludes himself that he probably got Aids or something else from Morgan. He feels ill for many days. The doctors tell Alex he is probably only having the flu and that he is clean. One night, in his sickly frenzy, Alex leaves his home and runs into the woods; he needs to find Morgan. He is sexually drawn to Morgan.

“What have you done to me?”

When Alex finds Morgan in the woods, he can’t believe what he hears. Alex has been turned into a werewolf by exchanging body fluids with Morgan. Their whole weekend fuck has made Alex sick and turned him into a monster. Morgan made Alex HIS—his mate. There is no doubt that Morgan is a monster, a mythical beast that does dreadful things in the night.

I will stop my review here; every reader should make his own opinion about this story. I liked Morgan’s and Alex’s story. They weren’t a bad couple. I wouldn’t mind reading more about them. I’m giving 3 couples.

The author does a poor job of world building. So poor it distracts from the story. I couldn’t finish the book.
