In Close Your Eyes, The New York Times bestselling duo Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen are back with a suspenseful novel about a once-blind woman with a talent for tracking serial killers
The FBI doesn’t usually consult with music therapists to solve their cases. But Kendra Michaels’ astonishing powers of observation and analysis have made her a favorite of law enforcement agencies all across the country. Blind for the first twenty years of her life, she cares little for investigative work but can’t deny her unique skill, or the results she’s been able to facilitate. Kendra learned at an early age to become hyper-aware of her surroundings, perfecting the art of picking up the most subtle audio, olfactory, and tactile cues in the world around her. Like a secret weapon, she is in high demand.
Former FBI agent Adam Lynch, known as The Puppetmaster, has weapons of his own. He’s a notorious master manipulator, skillfully handling criminals and colleagues alike to get the results he wants. Now he needs Kendra’s special brand of help, but she’s not interested until Lynch reveals that Agent Jeff Stedler—Kendra’s ex—is missing and may have run directly into the path of a serial killer. What began as a heinous murder investigation escalates into something even larger and more frightening: a multi-million dollar conspiracy to hide a secret that’s worth killing for, again and again and again.
It has been a good while since I read a romantic suspense . Well loosely romantic suspense as it more amystery if anything, Close Your Eyes by husband and wife team Ron and Iris Johnson offered an interesting premise. Our protagonist Kendra is an intriguing woman and rightly so as the series revolve around her.
Kendra may be painted as a simple music therapist but as we delve deeper into her story . She anything but just that. Born blind , she honed her abilities like any other person with a disability. Relying on her other sense, until a mysterious project gives her back sight and a unique set of skills that has had the FBI and other agencies on her doorstep. With a famed reputation for tracking serial killers, Kendra just wants to be an ordinary woman. Wanting to help her clients and forget about those times.
Until her past and present come crashing together when an ex FBI agent Adam Lynch reaches out and tells her the one thing that thrusts her into a world that she want to be out of . Her ex Agent Jeff Stedler is missing and the case that he was working on has hit some dead ends with him out of the picture. With the feeling that a serial killer is on the loose and dead bodies turning up , the two team up to solve the mystery.
A mystery that I could sink my teeth into . It wasn’t straight forward, and the pairing of Lynch and Kesley was interesting. Both gifted in their own way but each having their own motives for solving the mystery. It add only the intriguing story as Lynch manipulated things and Kelsey tried to think what in earth she got into . As it was costing her a lot , something she thought she would never have to deal with . Testing her loyalties and powers of observation, it was crazy how things we take for granted cold be used to spot things we might missed.
The fact she was such an ordinary woman with such honed skills, made this book seem more reliable than some of the other books of a similar nature. She felt reliable, almost human then some of other leading females in fiction novels.
As Keslea seemed a smart woman but why let the so called Puppermaster aka Lynch run the show and paint the other FBI agents as basically bumbling fools. It made only her shine and I wished it more focus on the her abilities . Not the snarkness as it caused even more stark contrast between the characters.
The amount of research and storytelling in this book, made it a quick favourite of mine. Whilst I wasn’t a fan of the way certain males were presented in the book. I can’t wait to see what the future brings Kesley
Whilst I could never shake the feeling that we might of met Kendra Michaels before and sure enough we have. In Johnson other’s series Eve Duncan series, a series that I loved but haven’t kept up with . A small moot point , hopefully with subsequent books in the series , it will feel less like that for those who haven’t read her other books or kept up to date. As I couldn’t put it down once I had to chance to read more then a couple of pages.
