synopsis

In the ruins of dystopian London, the Empire rules through fear and fire.

“Everyone knew about ‘The Flames’ and how much trouble they had caused the Empire. They were the only rebel group anyone knew of that had lasted longer than a few months without getting caught, leaving candles behind whenever they snatched somebody out of the Empire’s grasp. To get involved with people like them is stupid. So stupid.”

Ever since her parents were murdered by the empire’s agents, Jacks has been living on the street as a pickpocket trying to keep away from trouble. When she accidentally witnesses the rebel group ‘The Flames’ in the middle of an operation she is unwillingly swept up into their world, and has to decide if she’s going to go back to looking after herself or join the rebellion and help them fight for the people of London Ruins.

She knows that getting involved was stupid, but does she really have a choice? goodreads

review

Ignite is the first book of Rogland I have read and look forward to her next  book immensely.  I have read a few in this genre  now of over the years. . The  ones that standout are the ones like Ignite that have creative, a pulsing plot and plenty of action and suspense.

Set in a dystopia London, Ingite tell the story of Jacks and her friends as they fight against the authorities (DRT) who  work for the Empreror Donovan the self proclaimed saviour of the surviving people after the great War  and ruler of the Empire

THe DRT would rather have a new London aka London Ruins burning and  fear of them. But the Flames have other ideas . A secret covert group running about London, a  hope for all those who had lost  hope. No one knew who they are and has remained that why. Until Jacks decides to one thing for a friend and finds herself thrown  into their world. She heard the rumours but   doesn’t expect what she finds when she gets caught in one of their missions.

Jack is a tough street kid who grew up pretty fast after the murder of her parents. The night haunts but she  grown resilient and  a pickpocket  who will do anything to survive. However The Flames open a world that she hidden  away from away for a while.

She maybe a runaway with a chip on her shoulder, but she wants to belong  and find her  family. Jacks may be a street kid with questionable habits  that she has learnt in order to survive. But there more to this girl then you will expect and in The Flames the story really starts  to shape and we discovered the  true world that  exists in front of her.  That everything isn’t black and white as it seems.

Told in four of POV’s , allowing to get first hand perspective of The Flames and the resistance.  Ignite quickly picks up  the pace as we watch the gang in action int heir day to day life. From Zira, a wild sometimes unpredictable girl to Jeremy , the fixer with a mysterious past.  The author takes on their journey  as a group and individuals as they fight against the Empire . To live another day in  London. Whilst the action revolves them  in London, hints of a greater resistance at work  that leads promise this ony the beginning to this dystopia novel and promises of turning to saga like many before it.

Whilst this book feels like many other dystopia novels sharing common themes  and ideas. The characters and the creation of this world is unique and intriguing. Whilst the idea of another great  war destroying all that we know and giving this world isn’t something  new. The characters and their stories is what will keep you turning. Each POV brings something different to the table  They had get back stories and arcs that kept me turning the page. I just need the next book now .  Rogland has a wonderful prose and a future in dystopia novels and this only the beginning I hope
